Elasticsearch DoS Vulnerability: Why Indian SMBs Must Act Now

What Happened

In March 2023, Elastic Security disclosed CVE-2023-31418, a critical vulnerability affecting Elasticsearch and Elastic Cloud Enterprise. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to remotely crash an Elasticsearch node by sending a moderate number of malformed HTTP requests, triggering an OutOfMemory (OOM) error.

An attacker can craft HTTP requests that force the JVM to allocate massive amounts of heap memory, even though the actual data is small. Send enough of these requests in succession, and the JVM runs out of memory, triggering an OutOfMemory error and crashing the node.
